Animation and interactions

Animations were essential for Yuna because they transform a storytelling app into an immersive experience where kids feel genuinely guided and connected.

Yuna's Role

By bringing the Yuna mascot to life, we created an emotional bridge between the child and the app — she becomes a friendly companion rather than just an interface element.

The animations also serve a functional purpose: they provide intuitive feedback, guide navigation without words, and make every interaction feel rewarding, which is critical for young users who can't rely on text instructions.

This combination of emotional connection and usability directly supports the app's retention goals.

Why Animation Works for Kids

  • Engagement

Movement and color naturally capture children's attention

  • Intuitive feedback

Animations show cause and effect without needing words

  • Navigation cues

Motion guides kids through the app without complex instructions

  • Delight

Small animated moments turn simple tasks into rewarding experiences

The key is balance ⚖️
animations should be quick, purposeful, and supportive. Never overwhelming.

Animated with Rive

I used Rive to build all animations because it's made for app development.

Animations run smoothly across iOS and Android, files stay light, and devs can trigger different states without needing me for every tweak.

Plus, it lets me design interactions that actually respond to user actions, not just play and loop.
